Matters of Meat

Okay, I'm trying to love this veggie soup I'm eating for lunch, but it is NOT HAPPENING. It's gross! Blech! Maybe that's the key to weight loss. If it's gross, you'll eat only enough to stave off the hunger pains. Not that I'm trying to lose weight, exactly. Just avoiding the burgers and fries in anticipation of Ye Old Swimsuit Season. Blasted bikinis.

Speaking of eating and all that, I've been tossing around the idea of another experiment. Remember the No Shampoo thing? Good times. (I am washing my hair now, by the way.) Anyway, I'm thinking of a Meatless Month. Not because I have a moral dilemna about eating animals, no sirree. I'm a card-carrying carnivore, and I won't apologize for it. I'm just curious, really, about how living vegetarian would affect my mental and physical state. (And, yeah, blog material. I won't lie.) Maybe I would like veggie soup more by the end, too.

Calm down, King Pen. Put the divorce papers away. You still get your cows and pigs and chickens. I won't subject my family to a life without meat. (Which may be a contributing factor to the strained mental challenge. Cooking, but not eating? Yikes!)

Anyway, this idea scares me more than the no shampoo thing. It would be a REAL test of willpower to get through! I lika da meata.

Would I not get animal products, either? I don't know if I could go a month without cheese. That's just inhumane.

Okay, I'm gonna think on this one. Anybody want to do it with me? You know what they say... misery loves company.

Too funny that you just wrote this!!
I have decided to give up dairy for a bit. My parents are basically vegans, and I just went with the flow when I was there. I felt way better! I'm also trying to get most of my protein and vitamins from plants. I'm still eating fish, and eggs, but no chicken, pork or beef. I'm not saying the same for my family, and I'm not saying how long I'm doing this for, but...so far so good!

Let me know how your experience goes!

i....i....i...okay, i'll do it. But I have to have meat the last weekend of May, don't ask why, so it either needs to start NOW or after then for me. I am actually reading a book right now and the main character is vegan and it got me wondering. i eat the meat, but that doesn't stop me from feeling guilty every time I watch one of those "Fast Food Nation" type movies or reading something on animal cruilty. it would be nice to spend a month feeling superior. (just kidding!)

I'm scurred.

can we cut out all beverages but coffee and water too? might as well lose the weight while i am at it.

I rarely ever eat meat...maybe once every 2 weeks or so...and its chicken. I've been doing this for about the past year or so...Mostly to see what it was like...I didn't really feel any different, and I never crave meat. I usually crave salads and veggies and stuff...I don't get as full as I used too though. I get my fat and protein from cheese and nuts and dressings....

I have successfully gone a month without meat. Eighty-one consecutive months, actually.* Never thought I'd give up meat, but then I did, and here I am, 7+ years later.

* However, I did eat meat a few times while traveling in East Africa, but that was to avoid offending our gracious hosts who went out of their way to provide us with the "best" of meals. On a related tangent, East Africa has a large minority of Indians, and the food often reflects this. So eating vegetarian in East Africa is surprisingly easy.

OH, HOW FUNNY! When I posted my comment, your little "funny phrase generator" at the top of your blog said this:

"I am not a vegetarian because I love animals. I am a vegetarian because I hate plants."

I have a great recipe for black bean spaghetti that you can throw all sorts of veggies in. Had it for dinner last nite and its my leftovers today. Going veggie for a month does seem like a challenge, but there are TONS of recipes all over the internet for really good stuff like portobello linguine or veggie burgers. I say do it!
