Thank Him by Thank You

Such a great post (no surprise) over at Femina about why we teach our children to say thank you. Thought I'd share it here in case you missed it.

One of the central duties of parents is to teach their children to be grateful to God for all their many blessings. I remember my father teaching me that I could not even lift my little finger if it were not for God's power and goodness. That little lesson had an impact, obviously, because I still remember him demonstrating this finger-lifting.

So when you are teaching the little ones to say thank you and please, it is a lesson about their Christian duties that reaches beyond simple cultural expressions of good manners. It it teaching them to have thankful impulses. It is teaching them to speak the language God wants to hear from all His people all the time.

Our fallen, sinful impulses direct us to take notice of what is missing, what is lacking, how things fall short of our desires. This is why kids whine and moan and are given to complaining. But God has given parents to children to bring them up to better things. So we have to accompany our commands to our children (say please when you ask for things) with biblical teaching (God wants us to be thankful for everything all the time).

Children need to be taught to count their blessings: fingers, toes, parents, siblings, food, sunshine, rain, Christmas, and all the rest. And, as always, it comes back to the parents modeling such gratitude themselves. It is rather counterproductive to snap at your children with, "Say thankyou!" as though you want to add, "you little beast!"

Lightening

All I want for Christmas is to be NORMAL again. I feel very much not myself these days. I don't know how to fix that, and it's getting old. I miss me.

I've written half a dozen posts in the last few days that are unpublishable. They're too heavy, too much. Too internal. But for the life of me, I can't write lighthearted right now.

My body has recovered, but I can't say what's going on with my heart. I want it to be better, I'm trying. But it lags behind my physical recovery. I have done some reading, because sometimes other people's experiences help me understand mine. I read this today, and I'm posting it, because I am here right now.

...I run from the world and fling myself into God's arms, and, like Jacob at Peniel, I 'contend' with God. It's not about anger, or at least, not only about anger. It's the whole process, the hope, the loss, the pain, the despair, the anger, all of it, start to finish. I contend with Him to settle things between us, to bring peace and healing to our relationship. I contend with Him because I can't move on with my life until I do. And so I leave the world behind and isolate myself with my God -- alternately clinging to Him and wrestling with Him, resting in Him and struggling against Him, crying out to Him and lashing out at Him. And, through the darkness, I refuse to let go. I won't let go because, although losing my babies wounds me, losing my God would destroy me. I can't let go because He is life and breath and letting go would be the end of me. So I hold on until the light dawns, and then, at last, I surrender. I surrender to His will and to His incomprehensible love--a love that would sacrifice His own Son for me, but would still allow such awful pain and loss into my life. God's love makes no sense to me, that He would love me so deeply when I am so unworthy, and that He would hurt me so deeply when He loves me so much. But, in the light of a new dawn, my faith is renewed. My questions remain unanswered, but since "faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see (Heb. 11:1)" that's what I hold on to--I have to believe there is a purpose, a good and loving and perfect purpose, that I can't see. I have to believe that or I couldn't live through so much loss. And, by believing that, I can put my questions aside until I get to heaven, and I can heal, and I can finally move on.

She says it better than I could.

I do not intend this blog to become a sorrowful, painful place. I just have to work my way out of sadness, and it's slow going. I'm hoping, if I share it some, then it'll lighten the load.

Brother O'Mine

My brother, Trey, is blogging. I love his title, East is to the West. That's how far God promises to cast our sins from us when we repent... what a beautiful truth to cling to in this fallen world! I cannot tell you how happy I am to read my brother's thoughts. Please stop by and give a newbie a welcome, won't ya dears?

Video Links

SNL had a really hilarious skit this past weekend about the Bail Out Package. It took some heavy shots at the politicians, CEOS, and high-rollers involved in this mess. You cannot find this video anymore-- it's been removed from the NBC site, from YouTube... it's disappeared. Conspiracy anyone? Anyway, some people downloaded it before it was buried, like this guy. Check it out- it's too funny. I'm still shocked that they put it together to begin with. Quite out of the ordinary. Anyway--

In the meantime, here is another skit that really tickled me. I don't know why, but I could not stop laughing over this one. Mark Wahlberg talks to Animals:

Alrightie then. Enough stalling, on with the day!

"It Takes a Lot of Rain

...to make the grass this green"

Today I read the most beautiful, inspiring, God-glorifying blog I've ever found. I want to encourage you to go, start from the beginning, and share in the joy and depth of this woman's faith. This is what it's all about-- it's what being a Christian really is-- it's the undeniable, unshakeable, unbelievable goodness of a sovereign God, no matter what. It is clinging to His promises when the world falls out from under you. It is being broken, so He can be glorified.

I cannot recommend it enough. No, it's more than a recommendation-- it's an urging, a pleading-- because her story and her words slice through to the very heart of living in a fallen world. Besides a faith that totally blows my mind, she is also, hands down, one of the most talented writers I've ever had the privilege of reading.

You will not be sorry you took the time to know her, and to understand how it was the rain that made the grass so green.

Case of the Missing Blogger

Oh, busy life. Busy, busy, busy. Life, life, life.

I've been trying to knock some things off my Summer To Do list before SCHOOL STARTS! Yikes! What in the WORLD happened to the summer?

So, I've been the missing blogger. My poor, neglected blog is a casualty of my now much more organized and productive life. Guess something's gotta give, huh? I'll be more talky as I mark more things off my list, so don't bail on me. Although, to be honest, I think everybody else is so busy with their own lives, they haven't missed me much. Which works out well. We're all too busy for the internet these days, right?

So, what have I been doing, you ask? (Because you're totally, geniunely interested, right?)

-sewing like a fiend lately, because I know those days are numbered. I've actually got a few Christmas gifts out of the way, if you'll believe it!)
-organized ALL our files and family papers (very ugly job, I assure you.)
-got caught up on about a month's worth of coupon clipping and filing. (oh how untorturous that sounds now. It was really quite agonizing.)
-made trips, visited family, enjoyed summerly things
-cleaning, painting, repairing a rental property that has recently come into our possession. (how cool is that?)
-potty training! That's almost three down, one more to go. Yeehaw!

Next to do, get all the school stuff sorted out, get the kids up to date on drs apts and scheduled things, finish work on the house, and find a renter!

So I'll be around, in between projects. In the meantime, perhaps you'd like to hang out at YouTube, or CollegeHumor. There's lots of good stuff there, like this little gem, The Font Conference, passed along by King Pen. It's hilarious. But do come back eventually, yeah? We'll have some coffee or something.

All I Want

The guys from Visual DNA have come up with a cool new Christmas feature. You choose different images that represent how you feel about the holidays, and based on that, they come up with a list of gifts you'd enjoy. I had a ridiculous amount of fun "tweaking" my list. I haven't felt this way since I was a kid with the Sears Wish Book! Now, if I can just find Santa's address...

(Here's my Visual DNA, by the way. Since you care.)

Righty or Lefty?

Watch this voluptuous hottie for a minute. Is her fine self turning clockwise, or counterclockwise? If you see clockwise, then you use more of the right side of your brain. If counterclockwise, then you're more leftbrained. If you're just staring at her *ahem*, then you're not using your brain at all, and you're 'bout to get a WonderSmack.

I saw counterclockwise, as did the majority of people, though if you concentrate, you can see her go the other direction, too. Look Ma! I can use both sides of my brain!! For more on what your left/right sides of the brain do, read the article here. For more naughty silhouettes, go here.

And the award goes to...

Wowza! Jeanette over at Moot Thoughts and Musings has kindly nominated me for the Thinking Blogger Award. It was such a lovely gesture, and I am very honored! Thank you, J!

See, here it is:

thinkingblogger2ql6.jpg

I'm printing it out and putting that sucker up on my mantel.

Now it's my turn to submit my nominations for the Thinking Blogger Award. Here they are, aside from Jeanette's, which would TOTALLY make this list:

Michelle over at Belly Dancer's Nightcap. She's a longtime favorite of mine. She paints a life that is starkly honest and beautiful, in good times and bad.

Christin at Verbing Nouns. Hers was one of the first blogs I'd ever read, and she cracked me up. Witty and stylish, and of course, always grammatically correct!

Emily at Commonplace Life. She's a recent read for me, but I enjoy her slice of life. Even on the internet, she gives off an approachable and genuine vibe.

The RevJATB at Know Tea. You get a smorgasbord of good stuff here. Excellent recipes, obscure but entirely beneficial music recommendations, theological kickshaw, an occasional post in German or French, and a lil' bit of popculture taboot. All he needs is a circus dog riding a unicycle - but I hear that may be in the works even now.

And last but not least, Chris at Required Reiding. He's an old time friend, but a new time read for me. We'd lost touch for ten or so years, and have now caught up again. He writes on a wide variety of interesting subjects, and I am always excited to see a new post of his show up in my RSS feeder.

Okay my fellow nominees, now it's your turn!

The participation rules are simple:

1. If, and only if, you get tagged, write a post with links to 5 blogs that make you think,

2. Link to this post so that people can easily find the exact origin of the meme,

3. Optional: Proudly display the ‘Thinking Blogger Award’ with a link to the post that you wrote.

Blog Tool

I have about 60 blogs that I keep up with- no joke. If I had all of these blogs on my blogroll, it would take over my sidebar, not to mention my life! I don't know what I would do without Bloglines. Bloglines lets me know when a blog has updated, and I can just click on the link to get a preview of the post. If it's something I'm interested in, I can follow the link directly to the blog and read it for myself. It saves me from having to check sixty different pages to see if anybody has written lately. It totally streamlines my blog browsing. It's brilliant.

Anyway, all that to say, the blogroll you see on the side of my page isn't really relevant anymore. I use it for the few blogs that aren't compatible with Bloglines, and as a resource for other people to surf if they want. So if you read my blog, and you have a blog, but you aren't on my blogroll, no worries. You're on my Bloglines roster, and I DO keep up with ya. I'm thinking of getting rid of the blogroll altogether, unless somebody is using it. Anybody?

Well, I'm out for now. I'll be back on later to write something snazzy. (I do so love that word.) Y'all behave!

I have long been a fan of MST3K. So when I come across one I haven't seen yet, I squeel like a little girl. I particularly love the Shorts. This one I stole blatantly from an old pal N8dawg, and I make no apologies for it whatsoever. He kinda had it coming. (and yes, n8dawg is a white rapper. No, I'm kidding. He's a lawyer. Who raps on the side.)

Oh, and I hear another old friend of ours just recieved the complete DVD collection of MST3K. (Matt, you can be expecting a call from us very soon. Let the mooching begin.)

Freecycling

FREECYCLE.jpeg
Have you guys heard of this? Instead of throwing things out, or chunking them in the Goodwill bin, you freecycle them. Basically, you join this group and an email digest (or individual emails, if you prefer) goes out every day listing items that people are offering, or seeking, in your town. All you have to do is go pick them up. It's so cool! Plus, if people come to your house to get something, it saves you the trouble of lugging it out yourself.

And I love that I am giving my things to someone who really wants or needs it. It's much more personal and satisfying than dropping stuff off anonymously at a thrift store (where someone still has to pay $ they may not really have.) Plus, I've seen a few things that were being offered that I would have jumped on if I had a truck to go get them. (like bunk beds) You just can't beat free.

Anyway, you should check your city on this site and see if there is a chapter to join. You won't regret it!

Don't Ask Me Why

When I was little, I believed there were secret passages in our ceiling, and if I could only find the opening, then I could sneak up in them after bedtime and see what my parents were watching on t.v. (which was far better than anything I was allowed to watch, I was positive).

I also believed that my cousin and I were aliens sent from another planet to live with a human family to "study their ways". We would be retrieved after sufficient data had been collected through our eyeballs (which were obviously cameras).

Still waiting on the last one.

But, while I wait, I have been vastly entertained by I Used To believe, a website where we adults can confess all those silly childhood beliefs.

I love the internet.

Does it make you cry like a wittle girlieman?

It has taken on a life of its own, I'll admit. It demands more and more of me each day. Read me, you weakling, it yells. Put down your work and feed me! More blogs, I must have more!!

I-- well, I'm scared. And so I do what it says. Here are 3 tasty selections I've just added. Blogroll is pleased. It says I am a very good girl and that good girls don't get hurt.

That's... comforting.

Debby- writing Joy in Vanity. She's a pal o'mine, so give her some love.

Michelle: blogging at Modern Motherhood. She made me laugh, and milk came out my nose, which is gross, but also complimentary in a way. Right? Cause that's what I told her, but I think I weirded her out.

The most irritating dance in the world? That would be the cha-cha. [And yet] I cannot resist a mental Friday Cha-cha line today. Come on, ya'll! Friday, Friday, Fri-Day! Okay. Enough of that silliness. Everybody get back in your seats. (Hey, you too, Wil Wheaton. No lollygagging.)

The Simple Things

From the Gypsy, whose words are nearly as perfect as her pictures.

"I can see my littlest sisters from the porch far off along the dirt road picking blackberries as if they were gold, their bikes laying in the road where they dropped them and their laughter and conversation drifting back to me in the blue dusk. Soon they are running back across the freshly cut pastures, blackberries held like secret treasures in their shirts. I watch as the juice soaks in, spreading like a purple sea and then up at their faces – shining, oblivious to the stains and asking, “You want one? Try one, just one…they’re so good.” They surround me and the longing for them is that ache that belongs only to three blonde fairies living in the woods where there on no street lights and the fireflies illuminate the sweet, pure darkness."

Exerpts from Elsewhere

Loved this from Sarcasmo.

"There is a certain sensual joy that comes with a used book store with its stacks in jumbles. First, there is the heady, dusky smell of old books, that heralds of time, history, and the sweet faint promise of mildew, so potent it fills the lungs and leaves an after- taste on the tongue. Then there is the visual joy of seeing so many books pressed so indecently together, huddled in corners, or in large, promiscuous piles; heaven! For the ears, a symphonic shush of slowly turned pages from every free corner and aisle, where fellow book-lovers carefully persuse yellowing pages. And then, ah! the feel of them...I especially like finding books with worn covers which open to yellowing pages and a name written on the plate decades ago..fading with time. I like the idea of sharing this story, these moments, with someone from the past...gently holding something they once held, running my fingers tenderly along the pages they handled, being touched by the same words that once moved them too."

For the rest, go here.

All Your Base Are Belong To Us

Once upon a time, a video game was created in Japan. It was then translated into English, and hilarity was born. Here's the website that explains it, and here's the direct link to the video. For those of you who get Engrish.com and Fight Kikkoman!, you'll love this one.

Boggle: A Respectable Waste of Time

I have been addicted lately to the online version of Boggle. I guess if I'm going to have an addiction, it might as well improve my vocabulary.

Late Night Linking

::I thought I'd drop a few links as a cop-out since I have nothing real to write to keep you entertained while you're at a boring day of work. Feel free to add some links to keep the party going.::

Oh Santa, please, PLEASE get me this necklace for Christmas. I have been a very, very good girl.

This car looks like it would run on bubbles.

Some cool beach art... too bad about that whole tide thing.

For you parents: the application form to date my daughter. It is printable. And scary. And funny.

Oh... you've got a little spinach there in your, no wait, that's a smiley face? hm. no, I like it, really. It's... charming.

And when I'm not reading the Star or the World News for my celebrity plastic surgery updates, I'm here. I spent an embarassing amount of time at that website, but it was soooo juicy!!

::And, lastly, a quiz to get your bells jingling.::

Silent Night
You are 'Silent Night'! You really enjoy
Christmas, and you like your Christmases
conventional. For you, Christmas is about
family and traditions, and you rather enjoy the
rituals of going to church at midnight and
turning off the lights before flaming the plum
pudding. Although you find Christmas shopping
frustrating, you like the excitement of
wrapping and hiding presents, and opening a
single door on the Advent Calendar each day.
You like the traditional carols, and probably
teach the children to sing along to them. More
than anyone else, you will probably actually
have a merry Christmas.

What Christmas Carol are you?

Star Date Something Something Something

Okay, I know I was not the only person who watched Star Trek Next Generation... go ahead, admit it. You watched it. And you know who Wil Wheaton is, don't ya? Sure you do. I know it, you know it. Well, he has a blog! No kidding! And it's pretty cool. He really comes across as a normal, sarcastic, believable guy. I heart Ensign Wesley Crusher... he's so boy next door.

The Buzz

I decided to join the blogging crowd not that long ago, and what prompted me to it was the amazing variety of blogs and bloggers I found on the net. I have spent alot of time (probably too much!) reading what others have to say, and following interesting links to other places. One place I stumbled upon was an archive of Venomous Kate's. I haven't looked at her entire site yet, but this one particular entry really interested me. If you blog, or are interested in it, read this post. It's about the politics of blogging, and it will set you straight for sure! I couldn't tell if I was motivated afterwards or ashamed of myself. Lol. Let me know what you think of this one.

You may have noticed some changes going on here at APOG. That's right. We're "finding" ourselves over here, so be patient. In that vein, here is a list of discarded possible blog names...

5. The Shan-tabulous Blog

Thinking out loud

I came across this site that lists all the anacronyms you can use on instant messenger... So, I thought to mix it up a little, I am going to use as many as I can on this post. Ha! Don't you hate me! MEG.

OATUS, They say everyone has a double . . . I think
Judy Garland
may be mine. IDK. I've always thought I looked a little like her. She was okay, I guess. Maybe a tad on the dumpy side, IMO. (oops, i just alienated my audience, quick, retract, retract!)

NALOPKT: Her real name was Frances Ethel Gumm.

My favorite Judy Garland quote: "I've never looked through a keyhole without finding someone was looking back."
